About
Breaside Preparatory is an independent school for children aged 2.5-11 years that is committed to achieving the very best for each individual child from Nursery through to preparation for secondary transfer at the end of Year 6. The school is housed in an imaginatively modernised and extended site in Bromley, Kent, and teaching is provided through small classes.
Breaside is a happy school with a kind and caring ethos. As well as academic success, Breaside has an enviable reputation for sport and music and provides numerous extracurricular activities for its students. The school prides itself on preparing students for the 11+ and the many entrance exams for grammar schools and independent senior schools.
In 2023, Breaside underwent significant expansion with the opening of a new site on Widmore Road, conveniently located just a short walk from the Orchard Road site. This expansion has enabled the school to welcome many more pupils into the community, from Pre-Prep to Year 6.
The new site offers bright and spacious Early Years classrooms, complete with play areas and expansive outdoor learning spaces, including a Forest School. This provides an engaging environment, rich with opportunities for hands-on exploration and playful learning. The site maintains the same nurturing, dynamic learning environment and holistic educational approach, supported by experienced and dedicated teachers and led by Executive Principal Mrs. Nicholson.

Karen Nicholson
Executive Principal
Having started her working life in accounts and secretarial work, Karen realised she wanted to teach when she became a teaching assistant at her children’s primary school.
She gained a Bachelor of Education Degree and ran a pre-school playgroup before being offered a job as Head of Infants at a primary school. After the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH), she led the infants and juniors at an independent school before joining Breaside in 2008.
